Artificial Intelligence Privacy Notice

Instructure, Inc. and its affiliates and subsidiaries (“Instructure,” “we,” “our,” or “us”) prepared this Artificial Intelligence (AI) Privacy Notice to provide you with information about how our AI Tools treat and protect the information they process, including any personal information. AI Tools are any software application that incorporates AI technology.

Overview of our AI Tools

Instructure is continuously working on new and improved AI Tools. For the latest information on our AI-enabled products, please visit our Community Site to review our AI Nutrition Fact labels for our AI Tools (easily accessible via our “Featured Links”).

As examples of our current AI Tools: Canvas Discussion Summaries uses AI for discussion summaries of key points, questions, and insights.  Canvas Inbox and Course Translation uses AI to translate inbox messages and discussion threads across 100 languages.  Canvas Smart Search uses AI to conduct natural language search of course content for students and educators.

Our AI Tools use third-party base models such as Claude 3 Haiku, Meta M2M-100, and Cohere Embed Multilingual. 

Information Collection 

Our services collect any data you input into AI Tools when you directly provide it, such as when you enter prompts or questions, or upload documents or other content into an AI Tool. If you include personal data in your submissions, the AI Tools will process that personal data. 

Our AI Tools also capture some information about you automatically when you use them. Automatically collected information may include browser type, operating system, Internet Protocol (IP) address, domain name, and/or a date/time stamp for your visit.

Information Use 

Instructure does not use student data to train our AI models. We do use the information processed through AI Tools for the following purposes:

  • To operate, customize, and improve our AI Tools, including for analytics; 
  • To understand your preferences and tailor responses;
  • To transcribe voice and text-based interactions with users;
  • To provide and improve user support;   
  • With the consent of our users, or as otherwise disclosed at the time information is collected.

Information Sharing

As described above, our AI Tools use language models and technology licensed from third parties. To operate our AI Tools, we may share data you have entered into the AI Tool with these third parties. In all cases, we require these service providers to keep your personal data secure and we do not allow them to use or share data for any purpose other than providing services on Instructure’s behalf. You may also learn more about our use of third-parties in connection with our AI Tools by visiting our Community Site to review our AI Nutrition Fact labels for our AI Tools. 

We may also share personal data as required to comply with law or legal requests, to protect Instructure’s rights or the rights of others, or in certain emergency situations. Please see the “Information Sharing” section of our Product Privacy Policy for more information.  

We may also share information that has been de-identified or aggregated without limitation.  

Changes to Our Privacy Policy

If our AI practices change, we will post these changes on this page.  We encourage you to visit this page periodically to learn of any updates.
